This panel discussion aims to set in dialogue recent attempts to think 'the political' and relationship between space and politics broadly construed. The question of the political has become a central concern in contemporary Continental Philosophy and Political Theory. Although there are various, often opposed, theories of the political all address politics as an ontological question and take the emergence, nature and relations of political subjects as their object of analysis. The contrasting understandings of the political presented by thinkers such as Hannah Arendt, Giorgio Agamben, Giles Deleuze, Antonio Negri, Carl Schmitt and Jacques Ranciere make the debate on the political a rich seam in contemporary political thought. Whilst various forms of geographic thought have drawn on these thinkers in their attempts to think space politically there has been little attempt, either within Geography or Political Theory, to think the political spatially. This panel discussion seeks to examine how theories of the political might be understood in relation to the politics of space. The spatial imaginaries at work in a range of thinkers who have engaged with concepts of the political will be examined and their relevance to geographic thought interrogated. At the heart of the discussion will be the question of how these theorists’ work and differing concepts of the political have been translated and absorbed into Geographic research and what the future of their relation may be. It is hoped that this conversation may create an opening for new debates on the crucial relationship between space and the political in contemporary Continental philosophy and Geography alike.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.

Many thanks
Rory Rowan
